A greenhouse can look perfectly healthy at noon, then turn into a damp problem overnight. Beads of water on the glazing, wet leaves at sunrise, and that musty smell near the pots are all signs that moisture is lingering too long. These greenhouse humidity control tips will help you create a steadier growing space for seedlings, vegetables, flowers, and the gardener who wants to enjoy the season instead of constantly fighting mildew.
Humidity is not the enemy. Plants release water vapour as they grow, and many young plants appreciate a little extra moisture in the air. The goal is to prevent humidity from staying high for hours at a time, especially when temperatures drop. In a Canadian backyard greenhouse, that balance can change quickly between a cool spring morning, a sunny afternoon, and a chilly night.
Why greenhouse humidity needs attention
When humid air meets a cool greenhouse surface, it forms condensation. That moisture can drip onto foliage, keep potting mix wet, and create the conditions fungal diseases love. Powdery mildew, botrytis, damping off, and leaf spot all spread more easily when leaves remain damp and air is still.
High humidity also slows plant transpiration. In simple terms, plants have a harder time moving water and nutrients from their roots to their leaves. You may notice soft growth, yellowing foliage, weak stems, or flowers that do not set fruit as reliably. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and other fruiting crops are especially happier with airflow around their leaves.
That does not mean you need to chase a perfect number every hour. For most home greenhouses, a relative humidity range of roughly 50 to 70 per cent works well during active growth. Seedlings and tropical plants may tolerate or prefer more humidity, while mature tomatoes and peppers generally benefit from the lower end of that range. Watch your plants and their environment together rather than relying on one reading alone.
1. Measure before you make big changes
A simple digital hygrometer is one of the most useful greenhouse tools you can add. Place it at plant height, away from direct sun, a heater, and the path of a vent. Check it in the early morning as well as during the warmest part of the day. Morning readings often reveal the real issue because humidity rises overnight when the greenhouse cools and ventilation is limited.
If you are growing on more than one shelf, check conditions at different heights. Warm, humid air rises, so the top shelf may be far more humid than the floor-level bench. This small bit of information helps you decide whether you need better airflow, less watering, or a change in plant spacing.
2. Vent early, not only when the greenhouse feels hot
Opening a roof vent, door, or side vent lets humid air escape before it turns into heavy condensation. On bright days, start venting as the greenhouse begins to warm rather than waiting until it feels uncomfortable inside. A roof vent is particularly helpful because warm, moist air naturally moves upward.
Spring weather calls for judgment. A cold, windy day may not be the time to throw every opening wide, especially around tender seedlings. Instead, crack a vent or open the door for a short period around midday, then close it before temperatures fall again. The aim is an air exchange, not a cold blast across your plants.
Automatic vent openers can make this easier for gardeners who are away during the day. They respond to temperature, which often helps manage humidity too, though they are not a complete replacement for checking the greenhouse after rainy or unusually cool weather.
3. Keep air moving around every plant
Ventilation brings fresh air in and humid air out. Air circulation moves that air through the canopy. Both matter. A small circulating fan on a gentle setting can prevent the stagnant pockets that form behind dense tomato plants, under benches, and along a crowded shelf of seedlings.
The breeze should be light enough that plants sway slightly, not bend or dry out. Point the fan across the greenhouse or toward a wall rather than directly at one tray. This encourages more even circulation and helps dry foliage after watering.
Good spacing is part of the same solution. It is tempting to fill every bench in May, but packed plants trap humidity between their leaves. Leave room for air to travel, remove lower leaves from mature fruiting plants when appropriate, and avoid letting foliage press against greenhouse walls where condensation collects.
4. Water the root zone at the right time
Evening watering is one of the most common causes of stubborn overnight humidity. The water has little chance to evaporate before temperatures drop, and leaves or soil surfaces can remain wet until morning. Water early in the day whenever possible, giving the greenhouse time to air out while it is warmer.
Aim water at the base of each plant instead of spraying the entire area. A watering wand, drip line, or simple targeted nozzle makes a noticeable difference, particularly for tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. If you use trays beneath pots, empty standing water after the plants have had time to drink.
Do not overcorrect by letting plants go thirsty. Underwatering can stress plants and lead to blossom drop, bitter greens, or uneven growth. Check the potting mix with a finger a few centimetres below the surface, then water thoroughly when it is needed rather than giving every plant a small daily splash.
5. Improve drainage and remove hidden water sources
Humidity often comes from places gardeners overlook. A puddle on the floor, soaked cardboard, algae-covered trays, or open buckets of water can keep feeding moisture into the air. Sweep up spills, repair drippers, and avoid storing wet tools or damp pots inside the greenhouse.
Use well-draining potting mix and containers with clear drainage holes. Raised benches can help pots drain and improve airflow below the foliage. If your greenhouse sits directly on soil, consider a clean gravel floor or another surface that reduces mud and standing water while still allowing drainage.
A water barrel can be useful for collecting and warming irrigation water, but it also adds moisture to a small enclosed space. Keep it covered if humidity is consistently high, especially during cool periods.
6. Manage temperature swings after sunset
Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. As greenhouse temperatures fall at night, that moisture condenses on glazing and plant surfaces. Keeping night temperatures a little steadier can reduce this effect, although heating costs need to make sense for what you are growing.
For early spring seedlings and warm-season crops, a small thermostatically controlled greenhouse heater can protect against sharp cold nights while reducing condensation. In an unheated greenhouse, row covers over tender plants provide localized protection, but remember that covers can hold humidity close to foliage. Remove or vent them once the day warms.
Thermal mass, such as covered water containers, may soften temperature swings in a small greenhouse. It will not solve a ventilation problem, but it can make overnight conditions less abrupt.
7. Choose plants and layouts that suit the season
A greenhouse full of large, leafy plants creates much more humidity than a bench of young starts. In late spring and summer, give vigorous crops room to grow and prune only as much as each crop needs. Tomato suckers, cucumber vines, and dense herbs can quickly reduce airflow if they are not supported and guided upward.
Use support clips, trellises, and plant ties to keep stems off the ground and open up the centre of the plant. This makes watering, harvesting, and disease checks easier too. Group plants with similar moisture needs together so you are not overwatering one section just to keep another happy.
If a crop repeatedly develops mildew in your greenhouse, it may be better suited to an outdoor bed during the warmest months. A greenhouse should make gardening more enjoyable, not force every plant into the same conditions.
8. Clean up plant debris quickly
Dead leaves, dropped flowers, and rotting fruit hold moisture and can harbour disease spores. Make a quick cleanup part of your watering routine. A few minutes spent removing yellow leaves and checking crowded areas can prevent a much bigger problem later.
Disinfect trays, pots, and tools between crops, particularly if you have dealt with damping off or mould. Replace heavily contaminated potting mix rather than trying to save it. Starting clean gives seedlings a much stronger chance in the next round of planting.
9. Respond to condensation as an early warning
Condensation is not always an emergency, especially on a cool morning. But if it appears frequently on the roof, walls, and leaves, treat it as a signal to adjust something that day. Vent for a while, run a fan, check for wet floors, and hold off on watering if the growing medium is still moist.
A dehumidifier can help in a tightly enclosed greenhouse or a small indoor growing setup, but it is usually a last step for a backyard greenhouse. It uses electricity and may work against your heating efforts in cooler weather. Better ventilation, watering habits, circulation, and drainage usually solve the root cause more affordably.
A greenhouse does not need to be dry to be productive. It needs fresh air, clear drainage, sensible watering, and enough room for plants to breathe. Build those habits into your daily garden check, and your greenhouse will feel less like a damp enclosure and more like the bright, thriving growing space you pictured when you first set it up.
