A greenhouse can feel surprisingly warm on a bright January afternoon, even when the backyard is buried in snow. But once the sun sets, that warmth can disappear quickly. For many Canadian backyard growers, a greenhouse is the difference between stopping in October and harvesting greens, herbs, or hardy vegetables well into the cold months. Whether plants make it through winter depends on your local climate, the structure itself, and how closely you manage temperature, light, moisture, and airflow.
Can greenhouse plants survive winter without heat?
Some can. An unheated greenhouse is often enough for cold-tolerant plants, especially in milder parts of Canada or during the shoulder seasons. It captures daytime solar warmth, blocks wind, and keeps rain, snow, and hard frost off tender leaves. That extra shelter can make a meaningful difference.
Still, overnight temperatures inside an unheated greenhouse can fall close to the outdoor temperature. In a deep Prairie or northern Ontario cold snap, the inside may freeze hard. A greenhouse protects plants from exposure, but it cannot prevent freezing on its own.

Cover plants before sunset so the soil and trapped air can hold onto daytime warmth. Open or lift the cover on sunny days when temperatures rise. Leaving plants tightly covered during a warm afternoon can trap too much humidity and encourage fungal problems.
Heat only what you need
Heating the entire greenhouse to summer temperatures can be expensive, especially during a Canadian cold spell. A smarter approach is to decide what temperature your plants truly need and heat only the growing area when possible.
For overwintering hardy greens, keeping the space just above freezing may be enough. For seedlings, herbs, or tender fruiting plants, aim for the temperature range those crops actually require. A reliable minimum-maximum thermometer takes the guesswork out of the decision. It shows how cold the greenhouse gets overnight and how hot it becomes on sunny afternoons.
Small electric greenhouse heaters with thermostatic control can help maintain a set minimum temperature. Choose equipment rated for damp environments, keep it clear of plastic, fabric, dry leaves, and soil bags, and follow the manufacturer directions carefully. An outdoor-rated power source and safe cable management are essential.
Thermal mass can soften temperature swings, though it will not replace a heater during severe cold. Dark water barrels, sealed water containers, or large buckets of water absorb warmth in daylight and release it gradually at night. Place them where they will receive sun without blocking pathways or crowding your plants.
Light sets the pace of winter growth
Cold is not the only reason winter plants slow down. Canadian days are short, and low-angle sunlight is weaker than it is in spring. Even a heated greenhouse cannot make a tomato thrive if it receives only a few dim hours of light each day.

Choose crops that match your winter goal
The most satisfying winter greenhouse is not necessarily packed with the same plants you grow in July. Match crops to the conditions you can realistically provide. If your greenhouse is unheated, focus on hardy greens and herbs. If you have dependable heat and lights, you can broaden the selection to include seedlings, culinary herbs, and a few tender plants.
It also helps to define success differently. Winter growing may mean picking fresh spinach for supper, keeping parsley alive for another month, or raising strong spring seedlings before garden beds thaw. Those small harvests make the backyard feel productive when everything outside is resting.
